Bushnell (Fla.) South Sumter safety Rashad Johnson has over 30 offers and after taking the time to establish relationships and visit numerous schools, he is ready to trim his list for the first time.

Kansas State, Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan State, Ole Miss, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas A&M, UCF and West Virginia are his top 10 schools.

“These schools are making me feel like a priority,” Johnson told On3. “I like the environment and the coaches at each of these schools. I also feel like they can make me a star at safety in their programs.”

Johnson took visits to Louisville, Ole Miss, Penn State and Texas A&M this spring. He is headed to West Virginia this week.

Official visits to Penn State (June 7), UCF (June 14) and Texas A&M (June 21) have been locked in. He could add a couple more with a summer decision likely.

“It will come down to where I feel I can be developed and make some plays early. I am also looking at the education. I want to go somewhere that if I don’t make it in the NFL, that can help me get a great job.

Johnson talks recent visit to Penn State

Johnson visited Penn State for the first time back on April 6. It made a big impact on the Florida safety.

“I wanted to visit because I wanted to meet the rest of the staff and see the environment around the place,” Johnson said. “The relationship is great. Coach [Anthony] Poindexter, Coach [Charles] Walker and Coach [Ja’Juan] Seider show a lot of love. Penn State is one of my top schools and I always wanted to get on that campus and see the White Out game. I still want to see that environment for myself.”

After watching practice, Johnson went on to add, “I liked the atmosphere and the environment. It’s very different. What stood out is how Coach Poindexter coaches the safeties. The coaches there are real. Coach Dex knows what it takes to get there and he’s hard on his players to see the better in them.”

Penn State locking in an official visit with Johnson now puts him firmly in the mix when it comes to Poindexter’s top targets at the position.

“Coach Franklin told me he’s recruiting me hard and that he wants me there,” Johnson said. “He also said how he liked my film. Coach Dex was telling me to not chase the logo but chase the opportunity instead.”
